The lecture was entitled "How To Mine The Internets For Free Files That Will Win You Debates" and explains how to locate, download, and use evidence from other summer institutes as you prepare for the season.

Regents Demo Debate Results In 10-2 Decision for the Negative

On Wednesday night, four members of the faculty engaged in a Demonstration Debate for the Regents students.

Pete Clancy and Jon Voss defended the Wind affirmative (permanently extend the Production Tax Credit), claiming that their plan would significantly decrease the impact of pollution (which causes Acid Rain and Global Warming) and shore up the U.S. economy.

Brent Hansford and Melanie Johnson negated and went for the States CP, the elections DA, and case defense.

The students voted 10-2 for the negative. Since the debate ran until almost 8:00, many students had to leave a bit early. Nonetheless, a good time was had by all.

Regents Labs Begin Practice Debates

The three regents labs (The Bad Affs, Hmmm... Beasty, and Team Skipper) have begun practice debates. Everyone competed in two rounds on Sunday; one affirmative and the other negative. Lab leaders from the Scholars program volunteered to help judge; the students appreciated hearing some different perspectives and everyone seemed to enjoy their experience.

Live From Chris Roberds' Counterplan Lecture

Students in the Regents labs are currently learning about counterplans from Chris Roberds, whose card trick abilities are mind-blowing. He introduced the lecture with a card folding trick that culminated in ripping two cards in half; this was analogized to the way in which counterplans irrevocably change the debate.

The lecture will be discussing CP structure, the components of a counterplan, competition theory, and topic-specific counterplans.

Students gathered this morning in Johnson Hall for the opening welcome to the 2008 Marquette University Debate Institute.

Institute Director Tom Noonan welcomed students to the institute and went over expectations before convening lab groups for the first time. Activities will continue throughout the day.

Announcing The 2008 MUDI Lab Groups

Students will be assigned to lab groups in one of two programs: the MDL Scholars (for new MDL students) or the Regents Program (for experienced MDL students and non-MDL students). The lab groupings are as follows.

MDL Scholars:
1. Joseph Foy, Tim Hogan, Betty Maddox, & Dana Watt
2. Pete Clancy, Brent Hansford, & Melanie Johnson

Regents:
1. Stephanie Adkins, Ben Hamburger, & Chris Roberds

The 2008 MUDI Begins With Faculty Orientation

The 29th edition of the Marquette University Debate Institute got underway today as the faculty convened for an afternoon orientation session. Meanwhile, residential students made their way to Milwaukee and checked into the residence hall.

Institute Director Tom Noonan, the Director of Debate at Marquette University, welcomed the diverse faculty to Milwaukee and highlighted the institute's commitment to a collaborative teaching environment that maximizes the educational value we offer to our students. He was joined by Associate Director Timothy Dale and Georgia State University's Dr. Carol Winkler as the faculty became acclimated to the curriculum, the institute philosophy, and the best practices for working with our students.

The hard work begins tomorrow as students and instructors meet for the first time. Updates will continue to be provided throughout the institute.
